Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired on The WB Network for seven seasons (1997 - 2003). The series was created, directed and written by Joss Whedon.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was loosely based on the motion picture of the same name. Buffy's creator Joss Whedon decided to take the series to a new direction. The TV series is more dark and less 'campy' and the series deals more with the relationship of the 'Scooby Gang' (Fans called the group of friends the Scooby Gang for the similar characters to the cartoon Scooby-Doo.)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer follows Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as she moves to a new high school in the city of Sunnydale. It just so happens that Sunnydale is located on the Hell Mouth, which allows demons, monsters and vampires to enter our world. Buffy soon realizes that she has special 'powers' that allow her to hunt and kill vampires. With the help of her 'Watcher' she begins the training she needs to fufill her destiny.

Buffy is the outcast and soon befriends a few other 'outcasts'. They learn her secret and begin to help her fight the evil that converges in Sunnydale. They usually have to unravel the mystery of the 'demon of the week', but the overall revelation lends to an overall season-long story arc. The characters are much deeper than you average vampire/teen show and as the show progresses and the kids graduate high school, it makes a great transition into an adult series. They manage to pack a lot of action and character development into the show, which is great for the fans.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a classic and was extremely popular when it aired. It even was the launching ground for another successful series called Angel. (Angel was Buffy's love interest that happened to be a vampire with a soul.)
