The original Dark Shadows TV series aired from 1966 - 1971. Dark Shadows was considered a 'gothic' Soap Opera due to the vampires, werewolves, zombies, time travel and other unique story-lines for a daytime Soap Opera. Being a Soap Opera means there are many episodes to lose yourself in.

The early episodes are packaged under the title Dark Shadows: The Beginning. They take place prior to the popular vampire character Barnabas Collins.  These were actually released after the 'regular collections' numbered 1 -26.

The Dark Shadows DVD collections are split into volumes due to the high number of episodes.  These were the first released that didn't include the 'early episodes'.  The early episodes of Dark Shadows were resealed in 6 boxed sets with a subtitle of 'The Beginning' (see above).

Dark Shadows changed it's format over the years it aired. The 'telenovela' format paved the way for interesting story-lines that had a definite beginning, middle and end. This allowed the writers to kill off characters for good, in one story line, then have them appear again in another. The format also is much different from the modern soap. Dark Shadows didn't have the many different story-lines going on at the same time, but stuck to one route and every character had a significant part of the overall plot.

The most popular character from the series was Barnabas Collins (Johnathan Frid) and to this day can evoke emotion into anyone familiar with the series. This series was the trailblazer for many soaps and goth series to come. It's a classic and is a must for anyone that likes their drama mixed with horror. In 2007 Warner Brothers bought the rights to the franchise. No development news has been released yet.

Fun Fact- Dark Shadows held daytime's first seance to connect with the spirit world.
