Land of the Lost aired on NBC from 1974 - 1976.  Produced by Sid and Marty Kroft, it was created for the children's market and it became a cult classic.

The plot of Land of the Lost revolves around a the Marshall family of three - Rick (the Father), Will (the 18 year old son) and Holly (the pre-teen daughter). They accidentally fall into a dimensional portal and are transported to an alien world full of dinosaurs, lizard-like beings (the Sleestaks) and the 'caveman' like Pakuni. While it almost looks as if they are transported back in time to a place on earth, they actually are in another time and PLACE.

While the Land of the Lost TV show was created for children, it took a much 'darker' approach to it's plot than traditional children programming in the early 1970's. The Marshall family seemed to be chased by a T-Rex (nicknamed 'Grumpy'), the evil Sleestaks and always were on a quest to find a way home. Along with the 'darker' than usual tone, Land of the Lost took it's special effects serious. While we would see it today as 'campy', back in the early 1970's, these were actually done very well. The Land of the Lost writers also took the series in a new direction for children's programming, by making the plot and mythology of the show a little more complicated. It seemed to work very well for the series, as it's still quite popular. It's even spawned a movie of the same name due out 2009 staring Will Farrell.
