Lost is a drama with some interesting sci-fi elements that is produced by J.J. Abrams and airs on the ABC Network.  The series was an instant hit when it first aired in 2004.  The most interesting aspect of the creators is that they agreed to a 'final' end season, which allows for the writers to have a definite ending point.  This allows the story to flow more smoothly and makes for one of the best shows on TV.  The last season is expected to air 2009-2010, making the entire series 6 seasons long.

The story follows survivors of a commercial plane crash in an island in the Pacific Ocean.  The survivors soon learn that this is no 'ordinary' island.  A 'monster' has chased them, polar bear attacks, island hostiles, and strange occurrences and visions push the plot forward in Season 1.  The series explores the survivors lives via 'flashbacks' which gives the viewers important information that is necessary for the overall plot.  The series takes a fresh approach to the drama/sci-fi genre by creating some wonderful characters.

As the series progresses, we learn more 'mysteries' of the island.  It's healing powers, time travel elements and the DHARMAH Initiative.  The Others (or hostiles) also begin to take more of a role in the show.  There are lots of twists and turns in Lost as well.  In Season 3, they not only kept the 'flash-back' approach...but started using 'flash-forwards'.  This makes for one great ride.

Each season has it's own personality while moving the plot forward.  Time travel plays a huge part and the writers pay attention to every detail.  This is one of those series that is perfect on DVD.  Lost is best watched back-to-back so you don't miss a thing.  It's also a great series to watch again...once you know the outcome.  There are clues hidden throughout the show and it's fun to watch them unfold.
