Mork & Mindy was actually a 'spin-off' from the situation comedy Happy Days. Mork is the main character (played by Robin Williams) who is actually a space alien that travels to Earth in his 'egg shaped' space ship to observe human life. He was sent from the planet Ork by Orson (Mork's superior) on this mission to basically get him off of the planet. Mork was the 'Fonzie' from space, rather than using the 'thumb', he used his 'finger' for special powers.
Mork tries to fit in when he lands and befriends 21 year old Mindy (played by Pam Dawber). The two become close friends and he begins to share a room in her apartment. Mork tells her the truth about where he is from (Ork) and the series begins. The series puts a spin on the 'fish out of water' plot and was very popular in it's first few years. 'Mork from Ork' was a common pop phrase and so were Mork's signature rainbow suspenders. Mork & Mindy is a great stage to see a budding Robin Williams season his comedy methods too.
