NYPD Blue ran for 12 seasons from 1993 - 2005. It was producer Stephen Bochco's critically praised series that followed the lives of NYPD detectives. The gritty series was one of the first to really 'push the envelope' when it came to content.

As you can imagine, the life of a New York City detective can be quite violent and dramatic.  The series also found itself with it's own drama behind the scenes.  David Caruso played Det. John Kelly and left the series at the start of season two.  Jimmy Smits took over for Caruso as the 'central' character as Det. Bobby Simone.  Smits left the cast and that left a path for Rick Schroder to lead the cast as Det. Danny Sorenson.  While there seemed to be a core base of characters, the series did a great job to cycle through story-lines and cast members.

Fun Fact-  NYPD Blue had a reputation of being one of the most violent shows on TV when it aired.  It also pushed the 'nudity' card by being one of the first TV series to show a character's bare 'backside'.
