Oz was actually one of HBO's first 'original TV series'. OZ follows the lives of inmates in the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a level 4 maximum-security prison. The producers of Oz thought outside of the 'box' and took full advantage of airing on HBO. The freedom allowed them to air episodes that were crammed with real situations inmates face every day. From drug use, relationships (yeah, physical), murder, gangs and lots more. The character actors bring something unique to the table for each inmate. Oz was a pioneer in the premium cable TV series and holds up very well over time. Some find the series quite disturbing, while others find it realistic. Either way...it makes for some unique entertainment.
