One of HBO's critical hit series, Six Feet Under takes you 'outside' the box of your traditional drama. The series aired from 2001 to 2005 and was set around a family that runs a funeral home. One of the 'signatures' of the show is in each opening scene. As the scene opens, it sets the tone and usually shows the person that will 'die', usually in some strange or gruesome way. The body is then taken to the Fisher Funeral Home and the story begins. The writers do a very good job with the death scene and it's very interesting to watch them work in the death to the overall arc. The series has an overall quirky, dark tone, but that makes great characters. There are even some scenes where the characters have imaginary conversations with the body that seems almost therapeutic to the character.

The pilot centers on the sudden death of the father that owns the Fisher Funeral Home. The story then progresses to introduce the whole family as they all move back to the house to keep the family business running. You have the widow/mother trying to hold the family together in her dysfunctional way (Ruth Fisher). Her sons Nathaniel Samuel 'Nate' Fisher Jr. and David James Fisher are polar opposites. One trying to always do the right thing, while harboring a secret and the other a wild spirit that can't seem to hold onto a relationship for over one night. Their sister Claire Fisher is the teen who exhibits the artistic/outcast personality that seems to always find herself in trouble. The series is character driven which allows the actors to give some great performances. Some of the story-lines, while a bit strange, are very unique and are quite entertaining.

There are episodes in syndication, but they have been edited for content and time. The editing really can take away from some of the elements that make this series so good. The DVDs are the full original versions of Six Feet Under along with extras. You can even buy the whole season in a boxed set. The series has one of the better 'payoffs' in its series finale. Not to be spoiled here, but let’s just say you will have all the answers by the time the credits roll. And make sure you watch until the credits roll.
