The Wire's producer, writer and creator is author David Simon. David was also a police reporter and drew much of the concept from his real life. The cast of The Wire is made up of relatively 'unknown' actors. This was an intentional piece of the series and allowed for the show to be a true 'ensamble' cast. Critics loved The Wire and by airing on HBO, it allowed for the stories to be quite graphic and realistic.
